Yep, it’s all coming back to me now. I think I used to be some kind of teenaged stray, wandering the neighborhood and begging for food. Not that there wasn’t plenty at home, but that would have involved personal meal preparation, for which I was apparently too lazy.

I did these little 18×24 paintings last week. I am trying to remember what I saw when I was a kid in the ‘burbs, with a lot of time and nothing to do. I am noticing that what I remember at this point is women my parents age who could potentially give me food. Maybe this is the way my dog Toulouse sees the world.

Well, one more, anyway. More to follow. I have more fun drawing these little pieces of fragmented memory from my distant youth than I do painting them, but painting them is pretty great, too. When I get enough of the images together, they will come together as a story or series of stories, and I will scan the pencil sketches into Photoshop, export them to Illustrator for inking, and then back to Photoshop for color and effects, then back to Illustrator for page makeup. At that point I can do web comics or actual printing. I’ve done this process before, and it is laborious and takes me away from the easel, but it’s really satisfying for me.

And as long as the hot wet blanket of August makes it hard for me to slap paint, I’m going to do the most funnest thing I can– paint cartoons. Cartoons about suburbia when I was a sunbelt teenager.

I am trying to keep up with my less-than-prolific output of artwork, which should be no problem, but I keep forgetting to bring the camera down to the gallery where I do a lot of work. This is a rework of a painting I did that sold some time ago; everybody liked it so much I thought I should try to do a looser interpretation. And like that.

It is 30×22, acrylic on paper.

Painting At Interior Motives Gallery, St Pete

This is a big 4×4 foot canvas I’m doing in the style that I used a few years ago. I sort of forgot about this kind of big-brush direct painting, but it is kind of fun and really conveys a mood. And by mood, I mean, Really Hot. Which it is, and it will remain mostly continued Really Hot until sometime in December. I take comfort in the idea that rising sea levels will quench us soon, and alligators will paddle placidly through strip malls and family rooms… I’m hallucinating again. Sorry. It’s really hot.

I’m usually down at Interior Motives Gallery painting and whining late in the weekday afternoons.
