My-G-G-Grandmother’s-Caned-Chair, originally uploaded by calebism.

My father sent this pic and wrote:

“I am attaching a photo of my grandmother Stella Pryor’s rocker. I rebuilt it from scraps about 1957 in Cleveland Hts, and then when your grandfather Phillips was visiting, I re-caned the chair, myself. Now, 52 years later, it came apart and I paid to have it done. It is now ready for sitting and rocking. One of you should get it when Evie goes to the old folks home.
Do you recall this chair?”

My question is, what will Stepmom Evie sit in when she goes to the old folks home if my sis or I get this chair? Had you considered this issue?

Were I back home on the upper left coast, I probably wouldn’t often sit bolt upright at three am with the thought: WTF am I doing?
I’d have lots of validation every time I went to the dog park, the laundromat, got on the bus, went to the coffee house– there would be lots of me-s everywhere I looked.
What living here in the south has taught me is how to be alone and how to take care of the way I feel without any help.
There are plenty of exiles and refugees in the world, and I am one of the luckiest. I didn’t have to learn a new language, exactly, or worry about la migra, or get beaten up because I look different. So I have little to complain about. But that won’t stop me.

Whereas I, with my snotty “San Francisco values” and general unsubstantiated-by-accomplishment-of-any-kind snobbery, would regard being “Ohio With Palm Trees” as a negative, those at Creative Tampa Bay are apparently Zen with it. There is something to be said of making a virtue of necessity, and I am working hard on it.

Example: Skill? Talent? Those qualities are all very well for those who value that sort of thing, but I, on the other hand will become successful by means of electronic glad-handing and clever marketing. Yeah!

Painting At Interior Motives Gallery, St Pete

This is a big 4×4 foot canvas I’m doing in the style that I used a few years ago. I sort of forgot about this kind of big-brush direct painting, but it is kind of fun and really conveys a mood. And by mood, I mean, Really Hot. Which it is, and it will remain mostly continued Really Hot until sometime in December. I take comfort in the idea that rising sea levels will quench us soon, and alligators will paddle placidly through strip malls and family rooms… I’m hallucinating again. Sorry. It’s really hot.

I’m usually down at Interior Motives Gallery painting and whining late in the weekday afternoons.

Voodoo Dolls Stumbled Upon In St. Petersburg Fl Cemetery

This sounds like the work of a certain New Orleans artist now living in St Petersburg, but that’s just my suspicion. Come to think of it, why would she leave her dolls in a cemetery when they sell so well in galleries…
