St Petersburg Saturday Art Market (SP-SAM)

At last weekend’s St Petersburg Saturday Art Market (SP-SAM), which was again pretty good financially for many vendors , City Councilperson and market organizer (and owner of Interior Motives Gallery on Central Ave in St Pete) announced that the market would run every weekend until April 2008! Yayyy!

The St Pete Saturday Art Market is held at William’s Park, known locally as “The Home of the Homeless” (sorry, Harry Shearer). Without assigning blame for this situation, except to invoke the holy name of Ronald Reagan and every forward-thinking genius who voted for him, it can be pointed out that the homeless population’s occupation has made this park stinky, unsightly, filled with potentially dangerous artifacts and people, and in general a place avoided by the McHuman contingent of Pinellas county. The invasion of the park by the more privileged majority class of citizens spearheaded by the Saturday Art Market will not be without its confrontations.

Below: An advocate for the homeless had a message for me and my camera! But, but… I’m a progressive, an artist (translate: almost homeless myself)! Can’t you see my countercultural Chuckie sneakers? Don’t haze me, bro!
